How Do I Choose the Right Rug Size?

If your rug is too small, your room will feel wrong.
It sounds dramatic, but it's true.
One of the most common mistakes I see in homes is a rug that's simply too small for the space. Homeowners often choose a rug based on price or what's readily available, rather than what the room actually needs. Unfortunately, an undersized rug can make a room feel disconnected, cramped, and unfinished—even when everything else is done beautifully.
The good news? Choosing the right rug size doesn't have to be complicated.
Why Rug Size Matters
A rug does more than protect your floors or add color to a room. It helps define a space, anchor furniture, and create visual balance.
Think of your rug as the foundation of the room. If the foundation is too small, everything sitting on it will feel out of proportion.
A properly sized rug makes a room feel intentional, cohesive, and comfortable.
The Living Room Rule
In most living rooms, at least the front legs of all major furniture pieces should sit on the rug.
Ideally:
The sofa and chairs should all connect to the rug.
The rug should extend beyond the furniture grouping.
Avoid a rug that only fits under the coffee table.
If your rug looks like a floating island in the middle of the room, it's probably too small. Can you layer two rugs on top of each other? Yes! For example, you have a small- patterned rug that fits just beyond the dimensions of your coffee table and you love it so much but it's clearly too small for the overall space. Add a larger size neutral sisal rug underneath it that extends to all major furniture pieces, and you're bringing in additional texture this way too.
The Dining Room Rule
For dining rooms, the rug should be large enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out from the table.
A good rule of thumb is to allow approximately 24 inches of rug beyond all sides of the table.
This prevents chairs from catching on the edge of the rug and keeps the room feeling balanced.
The Bedroom Rule
In a bedroom, the rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
For most primary bedrooms:
A king bed typically works best with a 9' x 12' rug.
A queen bed often works well with an 8' x 10' rug.
The goal is to have a soft landing underfoot when you get out of bed, while also helping the bed feel grounded within the space.
And, yes, you can absolutely place a runner on each side of your bed instead of one larger area rug!
The Designer Trick: Use Painter's Tape
Before you buy a rug, grab a roll of painter's tape.
Tape the exact dimensions of the rug on your floor and live with it for a day or two.
This simple trick helps you:
Visualize the size in the room
Check furniture placement
See traffic patterns
Avoid ordering the wrong size
It's one of the easiest ways to make a confident decision before spending money.

When in Doubt, Go Bigger
One of the few design rules that applies almost every time:
If you're choosing between two rug sizes, go with the larger one.
A larger rug generally makes a room feel more spacious and cohesive, while a smaller rug tends to make the room feel chopped up.
Final Thoughts
The right rug can completely transform a room. The wrong rug size can make even beautiful furniture and finishes feel disconnected.
Before you purchase your next rug, take a few minutes to measure, tape it out, and consider how your furniture will relate to the space.
Your room—and your wallet—will thank you.
