Curtains are like mascara for your windows: they make everything look finished. But hang them wrong and suddenly your room feels… confused.
Here’s how to hang curtains the right way – designer style!

Step 1: Pick Your Curtain Personality
Before you grab a drill, decide what vibe you want:
Sheer panels: airy + light
Lined drapes: cozy + polished + better privacy
Blackout curtains: sleep sanctuary + movie night energy
Step 2: Hang Them Higher Than You Think
Mount your rod 4–6 inches above the window frame (or even closer to the ceiling for drama!).
Why? Because it makes your ceilings look taller and your room feel more expensive.
Step 3: Go Wider for Bigger Windows
Don’t stop the rod at the edge of the window. Extend the rod 8–12 inches past each side of the window frame. This lets the curtains stack mostly off the glass, meaning:
more natural light
your window looks wider
your room instantly feels bigger
Step 4: Get the Length Right
Curtain length can make or break the whole look. Here are your options:
½ inch above the floor: clean + tailored
Just touching the floor: modern + perfect
1–3 inches puddling: romantic + luxe (and slightly dramatic)
Avoid: curtains that float 4 inches above the floor. That’s not “minimalist,” that’s “oops.”
Step 5: Measure Twice, Drill Once
You’ll need:
tape measure
level (or a phone level app)
pencil
drill
anchors (if you’re not drilling into studs)
Pro tip: If your rod is long or heavy, use a center support bracket so it doesn’t sag.
Step 6: Steam Any Wrinkles Out
Give them a quick:
steamer
iron
or toss in the dryer with a damp towel
Bonus Tip: Fullness Matters
Want that lush “designer” look? Aim for curtain width that’s 2x the window width (or more).
