Small Space Living

This Manhattan studio rental apartment refresh was designed to feel layered, warm, and highly functional—without permanent changes.
The goal? Big style, zero landlord drama. I focused on renter-friendly upgrades like lighting, textiles, art, and flexible storage to make the space feel completely intentional while staying within typical rental rules.
Multi-functional pieces do the heavy lifting here. Storage ottomans double as seating at the keyboard and desk, pull up to the extendable dining table when friends come over, or kick back as footrests in the living area.
Right at the entry, there’s a mirror for that last-minute “Do I look fabulous?” check and a chic drop spot for keys when walking in the door.
All of the wall sconces and the statement chandelier? Battery-operated and rechargeable. That means instant ambiance, added architectural interest, and a big thumbs-up from the landlord.
The sofa transforms into a guest bed for sleepovers, while the extra-wide cozy chair is the designated wine-and-Netflix throne. I added removable gold floral decals over the sofa bed for a little glam moment. Since the renter loves animal print, I brought in leopard through the rug and pillows for that perfect touch of personality.
The media unit is actually three pieces combined into one seamless look — and it’s packed with storage. In a studio, every inch counts, so we layered in even more storage in the bedside table, armoire, and under the bed.
Cordless textured shades paired with sheer curtains soften the space beautifully. In the kitchen, I added a bold red peel-and-stick backsplash (her favorite color!) and swapped out the cabinet knobs for an easy upgrade. Installing a wall shelf for the microwave and hooks for cooking utensils was a game-changer — because sacrificing precious counter space was simply not happening.
Artwork and decor throughout the studio reflect the renter’s personality, making the entire space feel curated and completely her own.
This studio may be small, but it’s mighty — packed with everything you need to live stylishly in the city that never sleeps.
